Steinbeck has used silence as a technique method to show the development of the Character Slim to reveal the whole point and purpose of his personality throughout the novel. Steinbeck uses this throughout the whole book, it was to show that even though Slim was silent he was very well-respected by the other guys on the ranch more than Curley.
