Extensive editing techniques are found throughout the following two movies, the 1975 film, Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg as well as the 1997 film, The Titanic, directed by James Cameron. Between the two movies the directors incorporated jump cuts, crosscutting, montages, cross cuts, and cutting on action. These editing techniques moved the plot along and at times created suspense within the film. Editing makes the movie comes to life, whether a green screen is used, a mechanical shark, the pieces come together with editing to make a movie. Throughout both movies, editing and the soundtracks created suspense. The movie contains a similar plot with minor differences to keep it interesting for the audience. A majority of the movie was shot on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Also, because the movie is based on a human eating shark they used a mechanical shark that was then edited to seem real throughout the film. The shark had many issues so Spielberg decided to use the famous two note theme created by John Williams as a way to identify when the shark was near. After its release Jaws became extremely famous. It also follows the doomed love of Jack and Rose. The opening scene is when a treasure hunter, Brock Lovett, boards a research boat to try and find a rare necklace said to be on the sunken boat. When they go searching they find a safe which contains a drawing of the woman with the necklace dated to the day the ship sank. They find this woman, Rose Dawson Calvert, and ask her to tell them about her experience. At the time of boarding the ship she was 17 and engaged. She was about to get married in order to fix her family’s financial issues and keep her high class rank in society. Rose is about to jump from the boat when she meets Jack who talks her out of it. Jack is an artist who is very poor. After a night on deck Jack and Rose go back to her stateroom where the recovered picture was sketched. While escaping her fiancé Cal’s bodyguard they go to the cargo deck, here they witness the ship striking an iceberg and hear the dangers of this. When the ship is sinking Rose goes to free Jack who was arrested for a staged theft charge. As the ship breaks apart and they fall to the ocean Jack helps Rose onto a wood plank only able to hold one person. Jack dies of hypothermia but Rose lives. She boards the RMS Carpathia, which is taking survivors to New York. At the end of the movie, Rose drops the necklace -which she had all along- back into the ocean above the
