Subway is a privately held American fast food restaurant. The subway franchise was established in 1965 and still sells some of the world’s best submarine sandwiches today. Subway advertises it’s delicious looking subs using billboards, commercials, and advertisements. One commercial for example, features simple but effective advertising.
Throughout American history, propaganda pieces have been used to sway the public opinion on one matter or another. The famous Federalist Papers were used to sway the early American public to ratify the Constitution. The Civil War also heavily relied on propaganda to recruit soldiers and boost morale. At the turn of the 20th century, Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle was written as a propaganda piece on socialism, however, it was remembered for its cometary on the ethics of the meat packing industry.
Propaganda is used as a method to manipulate and control citizens in society. An example of this can be seen in Minority Report when there is a PreCrime commercial playing on every electronic screen in the city, including buildings. This commercial vividly portrays the PreCrime systems effectiveness and efficiency, reassuring the public and rallying support for the PreCrime initiative. The advertisement is a piece of propaganda used to cultivate trust in the PreCrime police department. It manipulated people into having a false sense of security in the government and becoming reliant on them for protection.
During World War II. Propaganda was something so big that it occurred during and had many ways to perform and act on. Propaganda was used throughout the war, for rulers or any form of government in order to get what they wanted to benefit themselves and/or their countries. One example that demonstrates this idea is a Speedo ad featuring Michael Phelps. The quote on that specific advertisement says “Worn by champions. My speedo.” This testimonial propaganda ad appeals to and targets ambitious athletes, specifically swimmers. An example would be “Be Sure You Have Correct Time.” This poster, aimed to persuade the minds of many Americans to adopt anti-foreign policies on many countries who were going to war with us at the same time. Therefore, the propaganda was trying to exploit the foreign countries’ citizens who we were at war with. A second example would be the poster titled, “This is the Enemy.”

In modern times, propaganda is utilized to achieve three goals: to deceive people, to justify wars, and to destroy the credibility of a person or nation. In George Orwell’s book, Animal Farm, Squealer uses propaganda negatively to influence inhabitants of the farm, which is parallel to today with how propaganda deceives people, justifies war, and destroys credibility of a person or nation.
One of the examples of propaganda during this time would be when the different companies making vaccines and using commercials to promote their vaccines. They used commercials to convince people that their vaccine was better than the others. Another example of propaganda would be the different types of posters that are put up whether they be on walls of schools or on the side of buildings. These posters are put there to promote the use of masks, social distance, and also promote people to wash their hands more often to prevent the spread of Covid-19. These are just a few of many different types of propaganda that happened during Covid-19 and is still happening to this day.
