The period 1750 to 1900 saw a huge transformation in all aspects of society. Beginning in Great Britain, the manufacturing process shifted from hand production to factory production. Newly-invented machines, utilising steam power for the first time, caused the number of goods being produced to grow exponentially. Rather than goods having to be created slowly and by hand, factory systems yielded more and more products, creating everything from pairs of shoes to machine guns. This new system not only impacted economies, but political structures and social norms.
In the Time of the Butterflies, a novel by Julia Alvarez, tells the story of four sisters living in the Dominican Republic during Trujillo’s reign in the nation. The novel details the sisters’ fight for freedom against the dictatorship, as well as giving readers a personal glimpse of these women’s lives. Looking at the pace of development and rapid industrialization of the United States in the late Nineteenth century, we can figure out and sort many major and minor contributing factors aiding the industrialization process. With the rise of industrialization occurring during the late 19th century the conditions for laborers in any industry affected by this revolution worsened due to the demand for ever increasing efficiency. Industrialization occurring at the end of the 19th century created a degrading work environment that led laborers to unionize and demand the opposite. Along with better machinery that came with the industrial revolution, management practices also became more efficient. These inventions were good for factory owners since machines did the same job as the employees at a faster rate and machines don’t get paid. By using machines, factory owners don’t have to worry about anyone getting hurt nor do they have to worry about how crowded their factory is. Before all this happen manufacturing was done in homes now it's all in factories, new inventions took over people's jobs, farmers don't need to do the work because of how much technology increased.

As stated by the publication in 1831, The Working Man’s Companion subtitled The Results of Machinery, Namely Cheap Production and Increased Employment, “You are surrounded… with an infinite number of comforts and conveniences which had no existence two or three centuries ago and those comforts are not used only by a few, but are within the reach of almost all men” (Document 9). Before the Industrial Revolution, humans were provided with only the simplest ways of life, but had advanced so much further with the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. Although life was difficult and unpleasant as the Industrial Revolution first commenced due to child labor and bad working conditions, unions eventually came into place to protect the workers and improve society to a greater degree. “(Before the Industrial Revolution), one person doing all five required steps in manufacturing a product can make one unit, (but during the Industrial Revolution), five people, each specializing in one of the five steps, can make ten units in the same time” (Document 4). First of all, because products were manufactured faster, prices were lowered and productivity increased.
Despite the risky components of the new machinery, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Technology developed rapidly throughout the industrial revolution, resulting in new factory machinery that increased production.

Up to the end of the Civil war, the way people went about life was about to change even more than what has already changed in the last fifty years. Post-Civil war, over 4 million slaves were freed. They migrated and assimilated towards the pacific coast and towards northern states.
