Tessie Hutchinson should not have been stoned to death in The Lottery. She was completely innocent of any crime that we know of, had a family that she was taking care of, and seemed to be one of the only voices of reason in the village. When she is introduced, she is portrayed as a funny wife. She forgot that it was June 27th because she was taking care of the house for her family. She called out that the lottery system wasn’t fair, they even said that every year it gets faster and faster.
When the winner is selected for the lottery, the stones are used by the fellow villagers to throw them at the person. Each name of the characters hold a meaning for the lottery or one that indicates what the future of the unlucky winner will be. The lottery date is one of the main symbols of the short story. It is set for the reader to believe that the lottery is wonderful event like a nice summer day, instead

In “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson uses foreshadowing when the children are collecting stones from the river and putting them into piles. It hints that something bad is going to happen because it is unusual for boys to be grabbing stones and randomly put them into a pile. For example, while the towns people were getting ready for the lottery the narrator states, “Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example,selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix, eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys.” (Jackson). This quotation shows that the boys in the village are finding the smoothest and roundest stones and putting them into a big pile.
So as seen by an earlier statement made by the author it questions the reader, why the children are collecting rocks and putting them off to the side, and could the children be using the stones as a weapon for a ritual or a tradition. This example of foreshadowing fits the classic archetypal horror story, because this turn of events makes the reader afraid of what will happen next, and it shows that maybe children are not innocent or vulnerable as they seem, and that they may be helping to liberate the world of innocent people. This twist fits the pattern, because horror stories generally have characters who do not show innocents and have a different mindset. Imagine a society where killing somebody for the sake of a tradition is acceptable. In the short story “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson describes an ordinary village with normal people, but as the story progress the details of their yearly practice known as “the lottery” unravels to be more disturbing. The author subverts the readers’ expiations by persuading the reader into assuming “the lottery” is a ordinary tradition until unusual details and the behavior of the characters come into place. In her short story “The Lottery,” Jackson seemingly uses ordinary details about the setting and the townspeople to characterize her theme that although society claims to be civilized, and may appear so, it is inherently barbaric.
Someone in a family can be chosen every year in the lottery. These people take part of a sacrifice of their town, where someone gets stoned to death. Sometimes, traditions are not always meant to be carried on. Especially when they become outdated. Jackson writes, “Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use the stones.” This is stating that they were not even doing it for the original reason. They were only doing it because they were so set on traditions.
‘The Lottery’ is a story about tradition and sacrifice. However, even though the NY times article is about sacrifice, they are for different things. Such as money vs. good luck. ‘The Lottery’ talks about this small, peaceful village that have no problems and has mainly positive dialogue. But this village has this really weird tradition.

The old man who criticized the other towns that grew tired of the Lottery has been used to seeing the Lottery around for so long and had actually supported the reason behind it. Next to the rocks in symbolism was the stool as well as the black box. The black box which was used to draw the pieces of paper symbolizes the key between life and death.
“The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson is a very suspenseful, yet very shocking short story. This story is set in a small village, on a hot summers day in June. Flowers are blooming, and the towns people are gathering for the lottery, which is a tradition the town does every year. As the reader reads the first paragraph they think this is a happy story. The title also says, “The Lottery” which is a word often used for winning something or receiving a prize.

Jackson says, “that they still remembered to use the stones,” she is hinting that they are going to use the stones.
