In this essay, i will be telling you about the two stories that we read. First, i will be telling you about “The Monkey’s Paw.” , it’s a story Sergeant Major Moris brings The White family a magic monkey paw that grants any three wishes that you want. The next story is “The Third Wish.” which is about a man that frees a swan that is in trouble that turns out to be the king of the forest.
The monkey's paw is just like the quote, “Be careful what you wish for it will surely be yours” (Baldwin 3). One of the ways is when the Whites wished for 200 pounds to pay off their home. How they got the money was by way of their son. He died at work due to falling into the machines. The Whites got a settlement for his death.
“The first man had his three wishes… I don't know the first two, but the third was death.” Horror stories, writers and filmmakers use everything for each drop of detail in a scene or chapter to the suspense, of what will happen next or why are you doing that. Suspense is in most to all horror stories,but have you ever found it in the setting of foreshadowing, like in “The Monkey’s Paw,” by W. W. Jacobs. The setting of horror can sometimes be very dark and mysterious, or can start off like a typical day. The setting can help you understand a story better, but can also add inscriptive detail to the story.
In the story, “Monkey’s Paw”, W.W Jacobs creates mystery and tension by showing the power of the monkey paw. With the power of the monkey paw you could make any 3 wishes you would like and they would happen. But it was not guaranteed that what you wish for would be positive or negative, so that creates the mysterious tone. Also the wishes that were made in the book were kind of crazy, so that creates the tension. In the first part it says, “ I do not know what the first two were, but the third was for death.”
In the story, “The Monkey’s Paw”, the White’s acquire a monkey’s paw from an old friend. The friend reveals that the paw is considered magic and then gives it to the Whites, starting a chain of events that brings sorrow to the family. However, just who is responsible for the misfortune that came to the Whites? Sergeant-

In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” the author creates mystery and tension by foreshadowing events and has dialogue that is considered creepy. W.W. White holds the most responsibility for the atrocities that the Monkey's Paw caused his family. Mr. White was the person who made the first wish of his own free will. His greedy desires and want of two hundred pounds started off the domino effect of problems. " 'I wish for two hundred pounds,' said the old man distinctly. " If he didn’t wish then none of the after effects would have taken
Thesis: In The Monkey's Paw by W.W Jacobs, the realistic essence of the monkey's paw made it fundamentally creepy. In the short story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W Jacobs, the author uses dialogue and descriptive adjectives to develop the mood and tone of the story and characters.

He saved the monkey paw from being destroyed in the fire. Sergeant-major Morris even said" if you keep it, Then don’t say that it is my fault. Be sensible-this it on the fire again."
The title, “The Monkey's Paw” was used multiple times throughout the story; At first It’s meaning or use was just what it was, a Monkey’s Paw that seemed like someone's old souvenir or a memento. But throughout the story it changes into deeper and more perplexing meanings. The paw’s meaning became things like the relenting desire to fix mistakes and regrets, and the symbol of greed and ignorance; shown by the wishes from Mr. and Mrs.White, but It’s true meaning is that you can’t control all things In life, and that you shouldn’t take things for granted. This is one of the most important parts of the story, It’s where the real conflict started and where part of the message Is the quotation or part in the story where Morris warns Mr.White about
In The Monkeys Paw, Mrs. White used the magical object (monkey’s paw). One out of the three wishes granted using the monkeys paw was to have her son back. The outcome of this was pounding at the door, not knowing exactly who was behind the door. The Monkeys Paw is all about granting wishes and not expecting its outcome. This is comparable to The Story of an Hour because Mrs. Mallard wished to have her husband back in her life, but she didn’t expect the outcome of actually seeing her husband alive.
Mr. White accepts the paw because he believed the paw couldn’t really have magical powers so he saw no harm. Although it is an object, the monkey’s paw symbolizes desire and greed, making it alluring even to unselfish people who desire nothing like the Whites. Mr. Whites, interested by the paw, tries to see if it works by wishing for two hundred pounds, which is the amount needed to pay of the family home. This is the action leading up to the climax of the next scene but the Whites will never be sure if what happens in the climax is a result of the wish or
The conflict in the story is not only the monkey’s paw but was somewhat Mr. White’s attitude. If he never was that greedy the story would have changed he would have agreed with Morris and burned the monkey’s paw but he didn’t want to do that creating the plot. Any change in the plot could have/ would have altered the course of the story but also altering the theme. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the downfall of the White family is when they receive the two hundred pounds as a compensation for the son’s death which was actually caused by messing with fate.
