Janie, the main character, has to learn fast about her role in marriage. At first she going in marrying Logan Killicks thinking that marriage is going to be full of excitement, but is disappointed when Logan buts here to do field work. Resulting in her marriage with Joe Starks. Janie married him because Joe was a young man full of excitement.

They were written during a time when women were controlled by some male authority figure through every stage of their life, starting from their father at birth and eventually by their husbands after their marriage. Although they are essentially based on the same theme, the portrayal of the theme is different in both. While Chopin’s short story gives a woman hope to be free from the confinement of her marriage, Rich’s poem shows a woman dreaming about the freedom she knows she will never get, through the tigers in her tapestry.

The Wife’s Story Ursula K. Leguin is a short story describing a wife retrospective of her husband who she thought of as a loving and caring father and husband a somewhat perfect person always gentle. Yet he had a fatal flaw that led to his death that the wife failed to recognize until it was too late. Throughout the story, the wife recounts important events that led to his deaths events that should have been clues to aid her to recognize the flaw within her husband. In the story, Leguin shows us how the wife’s perception was deceiving her. She was looking at her husband but couldn’t see him for whom he really was.

Marriage has only become an option in our civilization it’s no longer a social requirement, neither a priority for a female or male to get marry. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” Charlotte Perkins Gilman illustrates a controlling and dysfunctional relationship that also relates to “The Story of an Hour” where Kate Chopin also reveals a dysfunctional and unhappy marriage. When paired together, both pieces of writing portrait the other side of marriage where everything is not just a happy ending and it’s shown as incarceration and loss of freedom.
