How Does The Daydreams Affect Walter Thurber's Life?

Life is a journey, but journeys aren’t always eventful and exciting. As seen in the story, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber, Walter Mitty takes his wife to town for a hair appointment and to run errands. During the car ride, his wife nags him on tiny things such as driving too fast and not remembering things. This story was interesting because throughout the story he daydreams which helps him get through with the boring day. While daydreaming helped him, the author also shows how the daydreams are impacting Walter’s life in a negative way. Lastly, the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Mitty do not represent a married couple but instead represent a mother and her child.

The author shows that daydreams allow people to be happier, but he also shows the negatives. Within the timespan of hours, Walter has five daydreams. The daydreams could be affecting Walter’s mind which keeps him from focusing, this could be why he is forgetful and inept. His daydreams usually end by being interrupted by an element of reality, such his wife or another person. Without being interrupted he would continue to daydream which could be extremely dangerous. For example, most of the story was Walter daydreaming while driving. He received a lot of criticism for his driving such as speeding, failing to realize the light changed colours, and driving down the wrong lane. All of those situations may have caused an accident if he wasn’t snapped back into reality. By daydreaming, Walter significantly increases his chances for an accident which could take his life. It is clear that something as harmless as daydreaming could also affect a person
