Life comes with challenges that change people and their way of thinking.The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry shows us that Jonas changes slowly as the story progresses. Jonas changes by becoming loving when he starts to receive memories, becomes courageous, and selfless when he is on his journey to Elsewhere. Jonas is showing lots of signs of changes ever since he started to train as the new Receiver. First Jonas shows signs of change when he starts to feel love for Fiona and Asher (170). Everyone in the community takes pills for stirrings but Jonas slowly finds out that part of what he is feeling is called love. Jonas also starts to feel love for Gabe. Early in the story Jonas only cares about himself and does things that benefit him, but later on as he is receiving the memories he learns to feel love for others and care. Jonas is usually a hang low type of person but then slowly he becomes courageous. Jonas has to leave the community to reach Elsewhere but before he went he needed to stop by the Givers dwelling. Jonas decided to not go to the Givers dwelling but instead go save Gabe. Jonas was courageous by not going to the Givers dwelling and at the same time saving Gabe. Jonas must try to go on with the difficult journey. Jonas left orderly disciplined life behind that he has always known and risked his life, relied on what he had of courage because there was no time to receive the memories as planned (208-209). Another way he is showing signs of having courage is when eh must try to go on (223). Jonas was about to give up on the whole journey and wanted to die but he found some courage in himself to go on with the journey.
