The following Poe stories: “The Fall of The House of Usher”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Masque of The Red Death”, and “The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof Fether” contain themes, characters, and things that reference Poe’s real life experiences, that focus of the darker parts of human nature, most notably for these madness and isolation. Edgar Allen Poe is a poet/story-teller who is known for his more iconic works such as “The Raven” and “The Tell Tale Heart”, which earned him the title of “The Master of Horror”. A house that gives off a soul crushing aura according to the narrator “with an utter depression of soul that I can compare to no earthly sensation in “The Fall of The House of Usher”, or like in “The Cask of Amontillado” were the crypt is full of dead people and under water where Fortunato was encased by someone posing as a friend who before was urging him to go back to express his sadistic nature, “Come, we will go back before it is too late. And a mad house in a dense forest at the base of a mountain that is separated from the rest of society and is under the control of madmen in “The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether”, “The area was separated from the rest of society so that the system would be free from intrusion”. In all of these their location is complementary to their madness and builds up the mood and tone for the stories. Poe also builds tension by describing the settings in specific ways using words that build up suspense. In “The Cask of Amontillado” the narrator is in conflict with his friend for some unknown reason as he withholds this information, this causes him to take dangerous actions that could be considered mad that make his friend fear for his life, actions like, “I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche”. In “The Masque of The Red Death” the prince isolates himself from the disease that ravages his country which leads him to conflict with the mysterious figure since in reality no one is safe not even a powerful prince regardless of a so-called sanctuary “All these and security within, without was the Red Death”. In “The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether” the one in charge of the madhouse is mad himself and isolates the building from the rest of the world so people can intrude on his madness or the other lunatics. “He admitted not visitors at all” In The Fall of “The House of Usher Roderick” has been isolated in a gloomy atmosphere that supplements his madness “in this mansion of gloom” this is further shown by him stating the house has some sort of phantasm force. These aspects help Poe develop the themes of his stories which often involve madness conflict and
