Common Sense was written and published by Thomas Paine in 1776, during the early years of the American Revolution. Common Sense contains Paine’s commentary on the interaction between Britain and the then-British colony of America. It is widely agreed that Common Sense was a major contributing factor to the increased morale of the American people and heavily motivated the colonists to fight for their rights. Perhaps one of the most famous chapters in Common Sense, Thoughts on the Present State of American Affairs directly discussed the reasons that America needed to break away from British rule and become an independent country.
