Harper Lee wrote her famous book, To Kill A Mockingbird, at the beginning of the Civil Rights movement. The book takes place in Maycomb, Alabama during the great depression. She uses the Mockingbirds as a symbol of innocence. In the novel, Harper Lee uses Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Atticus Finch as mockingbirds.

First, Harper Lee uses Tom Robinson a mockingbird. Tom Robinson is a black man who is married to a white woman who he has mixed children with. He also has been accused of raping a girl named Mayella Ewell. Boo Radley was locked up in the basement of the courthouse for 15 years because he did something wrong and the sheriff was going to take him to jail but instead his dad said no he’ll handle it and he locked him up in the basement for 15 years. Everyone thought that he was a bad man even though they never even met him plus he still thinks like a kid because he never had the chance to grow up because he just sat in the basement doing kid things for most of his life. Boo Radley left chewing gum and soap sculptures of Scout and Jem for them inside of a hole that was inside of a tree until his dad filled the hole up with dirt so Boo couldn't have anyway of communication with Jem and Scout. Boo Radley also came out and helped Jem and Scout when they were getting chased and beat up by Bob Ewell because their father defended a black man in court. Jem explains “Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained”(16). This quote shows that people judged him and they didn't even know him and they never even seen him before. Boo Radley does not deserve to be treated this way because this is not how he really
