When Mayella was testifying she appeared to be more scared of her father than of Tom. If Mayella’s version of what occurred that night, Tom beat and took advantage of her, and her father came to help, happened, then she would more frightened of him than her father. Tom Robinson is wrongly accused of rape, and is then tried and found guilty in court. Afterward Tom ends up getting killed for trying to escape, but is instead likely lynched by the people of Maycomb. Scout narrates that, “He[Mr. Underwood] likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters and children...” (Chapter 25 Lee).
Cruelty can be expressed in every novel to display a theme or a point. In To Kill A Mockingbird cruelty is the main function. The characters in this novel, display cruelty and judgement through racism and those who are different the the normal person. The first main example of cruelty in the novel is Tom Robinson, who is a black man accused of raping a white women.
Back during the Tom Robinson trial Tom is accused of rape Against Mr. Ewell’s daughter. The audience gets a glimpse at what another man sees when Tom Robinson tells his story. During his story after Mayella tries to seduce him and kiss him Bob Ewell sees him and yells at both Tom and Mayella. During this time Tom said he was so scared and ran past Bob, out the door and into open area where he said he ran away. This is significant because it shows How there was a black man scared of what could happen in the leading times ahead.
Tom pass by the ewell place everytime he goes to his work, he sees mayella struggling to do her chores so he helps her. Everyday Mayella asks Tom to come inside. One day Bob Ewell(Mayella’s father) calls Mr.Heck tate and tells him …” Someone raped my girl”(167).
Author: Maddie Cross Tom Robinson was a Black defendant. He was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Which was not true, but since Tom was black they suddenly suspected he did it. Atticus Finch was an amazing lawyer that believed everyone has the right to give their side of the story. He had a lot of not very nice words to say because he was defending a black man.
A critical event in the book is when Atticus accepts to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell; however, he is disfavored against by the town due to his race. In the book, Atticus says, “...The only thing we’ve got is a black man’s word against the Ewells’. The evidence boils down to you did--I-didn’t. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells’...” (Lee 117).
Considering that the Civil War happened 65 years before the events of this book, people, in the south, were still extremely hostile, towards the African Americans. To best capture this, is the event of Tom Robinson’s case. Tom Robinson was an African American who was accused of “[raping]... Mr. Bob [Ewell’s]” daughter, Mayella Ewell (Lee 223). During his trial, everyone does not even listen to Tom Robinson’s testimony, instead, they listen to Mr. Heck Tate’s, Bob Ewell’s and Mayella Ewell’s.
In to Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robinson a colored man during the Great Depression was accused of rapeing Mayella they went to court and they fought for each other's innocence. Victims of rape and abuse are affected one way or another. Some physically and others mentally or even both. Mayella is a pitiful lonely girl who doesn't have any friends, is poor and has a drunk father. This causes her to make a unforgivable decision to seduce a man of different skin color.
In the book to Kill a Mockingbird there are two characters who continue fighting for what they want even though it is hard and the might lose. Tom Robinson and Mrs Dubose were struggling in different ways and hoping for the best. Tom Robinson was and African American man who was accused of raping a white woman in the south. Back then a man of color had no power and almost alway lost in court. During that time people were racist and African Americans were seen as less than human.
Tom Robinson is unfairly persecuted because his skin is darker than the skin of his neighbors. Robinson is not given a fair trial. Later in the book, an angry mob shows up at the jail, trying to kill him. These strangers acted without knowing if Robinson was guilty or not. Their prejudice, racism, and hate nearly leads them to murder.
Tom Robinson is a negro, so he is seen as a horrible and guilty man. If looking at the theme of the book being appearance vs. reality, the most obvious case would be the Tom Robinson case, the town sees him as a negro, nothing more than the. The courthouse gets presented with many things that can prove his innocence but the fact that he is a negro and a white woman is accusing him of rape the town is blindsided. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed" We learn how the town thinks he is because of Mayella's sayings because she is a white woman. The town looks down upon him, because of his “actions” but to be told in truth the town looks down on him because he is a negro.
Finally, as the book comes to conclusion Tom Robinson, a black man, is pleaded quilty with the charge of raping a white women. Throughout the novel, it was proven all he was trying to do and aiming for was to help a young girl. People in society gain the evil assumption that all black men and women aren 't equal to those of a different race. A part in the novel that proves how intolerable the society is; on page 242, "A white man 's word, against a black man 's word, the white man always wins" (Lee). This quote shows how the main reason Tom was guilty was due to the color of his skin.
Tom Robinson is a black man who is wrongfully convicted of raping a white girl, Mayella Ewell. This novel goes through Scout's life from when she was 6, till she is 9. She lives in the town of Maycomb Alabama, and lives an innocent life until about halfway through the story, where she begins to ask questions. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout shows the readers that racial inequality creates an unjust society through the African American community, through the people surrounding colored folks, and through Tom Robinson’s Case. The first example of the consequences of racial inequality is the African American community in Maycomb.
This novel is mostly centered on Tom Robinson’s case and the final judgment. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella, daughter of Bob Ewell. Atticus, being a symbol of good moral, dug his own grave when he decided to defend Tom. Since Tom Robinson was an African-American, all the odds were against him, so Atticus’s decision to defend Tom was the cause of the enmity between society and his family.
