Society is not all that perfect. The book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain, perfectly explains this. This book follows Tom Sawyer’s life in society and how he wants to escape it. Society has been improving and evolving our culture, but over the past few years the progress has been slowing down, and, instead, sprouted some new problems. These problems, like discrimination and hatred, have all been caused by society’s words and actions that we have said and done. Having these problems will slow down and eventually stop society’s progression and make it unchangeable. (1)In society, people are discriminated because of their race. For example, “blacks” are stereotyped untrustworthy and that they always lie, even though they did not do anything wrong. “But I never see a nigger that wouldn’t lie.” (Twain p.66) demonstrates that the people in Tom’s society, many people never believed what black people. This was because most people assumed that black people always lied. Because of that assumption, society discriminated black people that they were not trustworthy. This can relate to today’s society because we are still discriminating races, especially “blacks”, today. Black people are discriminated so much that activists have even started a “Black Lives Matter” movement because there are so much racism and violence directed towards them. Physical violence can simply only be caused by what someone has said. For instance, “‘You’re a coward and a pup.” (Twain, p.15) shows how Tom is having a verbal fight with another boy, but later in the chapter, it states “In an instant both boys were rolling and tumbling in the dirt,” (Twain, p.16). This quote is depicting the two boys engaged in a physical, violent fight. This fight was caused merely by what Tom said. Protest violence can also be started the same way. The contradicting sides may say infuriating, negative things to each other, and this leads to physical violence. In today’s society, some people do not watch what they say. Therefore, others are offended and violence breaks out. Because of this, society is often broken up by this violence that is caused merely by what someone has
