The story, Monkey’s Paw, is about a family that comes in contact with a magical monkey’s paw. What the family doesn’t know is that the paw’s wishes have consequences. W.W. Jacobs, the author, uses mystery, tension, and surprise all throughout the story. Part 1 of the story is about how the family obtained the monkey’s paw. This section mostly uses mystery and tension in the text. In the text, it says “I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death.” This creates both mystery and tension. It is caused by the raised questions, like why the first owner wished for death. Near the end of the section, “It moved, he cried, with a glance of disgust at the object as it lay on the floor” creates more mystery.
