Buck, she awards the reader with an extraordinary and a thread hanging story from beginning to end. Since the beginning of the story, Buck gives the reader an ideal example of change with characters. In The Good Earth, various characters demonstrate an excellent example of change through a particular time or place. Wang Lung is the perfect representation of change, from a simple and cautious farmer, he changes into a dignified rich man. Originally the first visit to the House of Hwang’s was to receive his wife O-lan. Months after them being married O-lan tells Wang Lung that she is expecting. When the child is born Wang Lung is excited to announce the gender, “We shall have to buy a good basketful of eggs and dye them all red for the village. Thus will everyone know I have a son (39)!” This is a time where Wang Lung is extremely satisfied with his life because he has been blessed with a son, he will carry the family name and work in the field when he is older. Not only is Wang Lung affected by so is O-lan, “ And again the slow smile spread over her face, the smile that never lightened the dullness of her narrow black eyes, and after a long time she said, ‘ Last year this time I was slave in that house.’ (55)” She is happy that her life had changed so much in one year from being a slave to having a prosperous family.
