Rick Warren, a renowned author and global influencer, once said, “When you feel lonely, refuse to become resentful, because bitterness will eat you up." It seems as if Warren is trying to say that if you’re lonely for so long, it can make you bitter and think everything is unfair. As true as this concept is for real life, it can also be applied to great works of literature as well. For instance, the classic novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, features many lonely characters that turn bitter and angry. The book tells the story of two migrant workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, who travel together as friends to work at different ranches to make money to save up for their dream home and farm to live independently. This scene shows how Curleys Wife became bitter and angry over time from loneliness because it shows how she can just snap and yell at the men when she realized she wasn’t wanted and they didn’t want to listen to her. This also shows how much power she has over them and how having somebody to talk to can help a lot. Without a doubt, the theme is represented through Curley’s Wife because of how mean she can get when people don’t want to listen to her and think that she is trying to get with the other men just because she is the only woman on the ranch. This all shows how Crooks, the stable hand, and Curleys wife’s loneliness turned to bitterness and anger by showing how mean they can be when they realize people don’t want to listen to them or when they get annoyed. For instance, Crooks teases and makes Lennie sad and confused by telling him that George won’t come back, just shows that he wants to put his loneliness on others to see how they would react.
