In the book “The Lord of the Flies” Golding’s words reveal the connection of People using fear to controll others, to Jack and his constant drive for power. While Jack also uses fear to gain the support from his fellow island members in a quest for power. This is highlighted when Jack tries attempts to overthrow Ralph: “Quiet!” shouted Jack.

Lord of the Flies is set in the early 20th century, during a time when Europe is under attack and surrounded by war. This creates constant conflict between Ralph and Jack because they have totally different opinions on what to do.
In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a group of boys land on an uninhabited island in the midst of an unnamed war. Jack Merridew, the leader of the choir boys, insists on the boys following rules in the beginning and still inhabits the mindset that there are consequences and rewards for actions. Jack attempts to be leader but Ralph, a fair-haired 12 year old boy, wins the vote. Jack makes it his job to hunt and get meat for the rest of the boys. Jack becomes so invested in the hunt that he neglects the fire and ruins their chance to get home because a ship was on the horizon.
Fear drives these boys to follow a corrupt leader because they have their own self-interest in mind. When Jack gains power, he promises the boys what they desire. At first no one joins for fear of being an outcast, but the promise of desire, most of the boys being drawn to the meat Jack offers, soon draws the boys to join Jack. Once Jack is in power, he has a feast to show boys who haven't joined him that what they want is with Jack's tribe.

Human behaviors are easy to be changed by the experiences and environment. As the time passes by, the changed behaviors can be worse or better than before. However, most people become worse because of the specific experiences in their life time. The perspective of Lord of the Flies is through the eyes of the Second World War and since he was in this war, his point of view on violence changed and gave him a different outlook on society.
