In his speech to the Puritans, Winthrop makes many biblical allusions to convince the Puritans that they are following the prophecy, and to make it clear that the community that they are establishing in the New World is one of obedience to God and order. Him telling them that they are completing the prophecy gives them a sense of comfort and will make them feel as if they are doing what God wants them to do. The biblical allusion also plays the role of telling them exactly what they are supposed to do when they arrive. The prophecy tells them that they need to be faithful and obedient to God. They also need to follow the rules of the covenant. Winthrop is setting up the “ground rules” for the Puritans when they are in the New World. Winthrop makes another biblical allusion when he talks about “life and death” and “good and evil”. He connects these two opposites with each other, connecting life with good and death with evil. He is telling the Puritans that if they do what they are supposed to, then they will live, but if they commit any act of evil, then death will loom among them. When the Puritans arrive in the New World, they are supposed to live in a tight-knit community. After all, they believe that if one person sins, then they will all be doomed. His talk about evil and death tells the Puritans that there is no room for error once they
