After I have read the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I realized that there were multiple different symbols that helped convey complex ideas. For me I have found that in the Novel there are three important symbols that help shape the plot of the story and these are Methuselah the Parrot, Palindromes: Which is Ada’s journal, and lastly the green Mamba snake that killed Ruth May. The significance about all of these symbols is that they tend to add a meaning and depth to the story.
In the Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver, the Price family forcefully goes on a journey to the Congo to assist Nathan, the fatherly head, in educating the people of the Congo about the word of God. Throughout the novel, Nathan uses the symbol of the bangala tree as a comparison to Jesus considering “bangala” means something precious and dear. However, the meaning of this word changes completely when spoken improperly. In the beginning of the novel Nathan's experiences of the time he spent in war are revealed, which causes him to be moved my selfish desires to save everyone.
Rather than supplying William Wordsworth with an excuse in response to “Invitation into Cumberland”, Charles Lamb justifies the city of London. London is the city he has lived in his whole life, and he holds the city very dear to his heart. Instead of giving Wordsworth a simple rejection, he asks multiple rhetorical questions in an attempt to convey his point. Lamb is very adamant about portraying the glories of living in the city of London, and he desires for Wordsworth to understand why and uses rhetorical questions in order to try to convey his message. Lamb begins politely with an apologetic tone used to display the intent of his letter, used as a means to prepare Wordsworth for not only his justification of the city of London, but also as a means to transition into a sort of tearing apart of the romantics and their lives in the country.
Religion in The Butterflies The theme of religion is found throughout the book In the Time of the Butterflies. Julia Alvarez uses the theme to give life and development to the characters as well as advance the story. It provides a brighter more pure side to contrast the events of the Rebellion and Trujillo’s actions. Religion also keeps the people of the Dominican Republic together providing guidance for them.
Throughout the novel-That Eye The Sky, written by Tim Winton, it explores spirituality. The novel uses various first person techniques such as symbolism, imagery and of course characterisation. Morton Flack which is the narrator and the protagonist of the film has a strong connection with spiritualty although he does not fully understand what that is or why he can see and hear things that others can not. It becomes obvious from early in the novel that Ort’s life revolves around his family. The relationship the Flack family has with each other dynamically shifts after Sam ( Ort’s dad) has a terrible car accident.
Jonathan Edwards uses several types of writing skills to persuade his audience of God’s intentions. His use of figurative language, analogies, imagery, and repetition all emphasize Edwards’s views. He uses fear, anger, and apathy to appeal to the audience in attempt to warn his audience of God’s intentions. Jonathan Edwards uses fear in this sermon to terrorize his audience into thinking of God as someone to be feared, not someone to be loved. Throughout the sermon, Edwards uses figurative language along with imagery to frighten the audience.
Two scholarly writers brilliantly conveyed nature in their own opinion, an essay written by John Miller called, ”The Calypso Borealis," and a poem by William Wordsworth called, "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.” Both authors created work that acquires their idea of the beauty of nature while showing their compassion and love for nature. They each endured the essence in their own way. Each author also used their memory as descriptive imagery to creative share the scenery and amazement of their experience. Each individual has their own personal opinion about nature and how they decide to express their feelings can be diverse, and both authors, John Muir and William Wordsworth, expressed their compassion and love for nature in their own way.
When Jesus Became God is written by Richard Rubenstein suggests that Jesus was divine, but they do not insist upon it. Hundreds of years after Jesus ' death, the Church councils made Jesus ' divinity a central tenet of belief among many of his followers. When Jesus Became God is a narrative of the history of the Christians ' early efforts to define Christianity by convening councils and writing creeds. Rubenstein is most interested in the battle between Arius, Presbyter of Alexandria, and Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria. Arius the leader of the Arians said that Christ did not share God 's nature but was the first creature God created.
This passage from “A white Heron”, by Sarah Orne Jewett, details a short yet epic journey of a young girl, and it is done in an entertaining way. Jewett immediately familiarizes us with our protagonist, Sylvia, in the first paragraph, and our antagonist: the tree. However, this is a bit more creative, as the tree stands not only as an opponent, but as a surmountable object that can strengthen and inspire Sylvia as she climbs it. This “old pine” is described as massive, to the point where it, “towered above them all and made a landmark for sea and shore miles and miles away.” (Line 8).
These images show Wordsworth’s relationship with nature because he personifies this flower allowing him to relate it and become one with nature.
George Herbert talks about the notion of karma, in which if one performs generous deeds throughout one's lifetime, they will also be rewarded with good. This philosophy aligns with the Catholic belief in which one must give benefactions to the unfortunate in order to get to heaven. In addition, he spoke about the ‘old prayer-book’, alluding to the bible. To exemplify this, he offered the personification of hope, his watch, symbolizing time. He does that in the hopes to earn a stable future.

Poets, artists, writers, and philosophers all believe the natural world can provide healthy emotions and morals. William Wordsworth, a notorious Romantic poet, circles many of his poems around nature and its power including his “The World is Too Much With Us” and “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.”

On natural death begs the question of if death actually is painful or if it is only minute and diminutive. Lewis Thomas illustrates to his audience the conceptual idea of death being small. He begins with people's view of versus his own.
Another theme illustrated through Wilde’s use of motifs and symbols is the theme of superficiality. The theme of superficiality can be understood as a sense of the superficial view of outer beauty that is shown in the work. It relates to the concept of remaining young, which is an important factor of what is shown in the novel. This is an important part of the novel because outer beauty plays a bigger role for Dorian, than inner beauty does. In the beginning of the novel, Lord Henry and Dorian have a conversation that focuses on the topic of youth and Dorian 's outer beauty – Lord Henry mentions the fact that Dorian has a beautiful face, and later during this conversation, Lord Henry states that: “youth is the only thing worth having…”
However there is a deeper connection between romanticism and nature all together. Many poets consider nature as the source of human ideas and emotions. “Henry David Thoreau says a poet who lived in a cabin on Walden Pond for two years, believed that people were meant to live in the world of nature”. Although the work of nature is characterized by search for self or identity, the poet William Wordsworth getting inspiration from Coleridge and nature wrote of the deeper emotions. Romanticism and nature are connected because the artists and philosophers of the romantic period romanticized the beauty of nature, and the power of the natural world.
