As I look around this crowd full of aspiring authors, full of fresh views and ideas, I speak to you not as a mentor or a teacher but as one of you. A writer. A artist of your craft, who understands your passion on a spiritual level, to ask, in what ways reading and writing enriches your life.
When you pick up your pencil and paper, what do you always wish to accomplish? What do you want to leave after you finish writing your poem, or your novel?

Writing is an art, your words and ideas create a masterpiece for other people to process and reflect on, giving others the ability to look you and your ideas in a different. my advice to young writers who are asking themselves how writing enriches your life. Think. When you read Dickens how does it impact you? Does it make you want to write the next The Tales of Two Cities? Does it make you want to be the next Dickens? Or does it somehow incorporate more into your life?

That quote is incredibly true, the knowledge you are able to gain from reading the fantastic works of Poe or Whitman will impact your views and beliefs forever and mold them. Reading is a way to experience what has happened before in history and learn from it while giving you the tools to create the future you hope to want/have
