Emergent self-knowledge of personal writing influences how approaches will be taken to develop writing skills in students. Utilisation of a writer’s journal enables emerging writers to understand relationships between the purpose of a journal activity and the intended audience (Bishop, 1996, p.34). Acknowledgement of self-emergence as a writer enables the author to include additional information into their work for clarity of the text, therefore enhancing that knowledge attained, ensuring the writer understands the importance of skills associated with writing polished pieces of writing. It is important for educators to have a refined understanding of language and how it works. Research shows the more understanding an educator has on developing writing skills in their students, the task involved will become less complicated, resulting in meaningful learning experiences for students (Loane & Muir, 2017, p. xviii). Therefore, it is essential that both educators and emerging writers maintain a level of environmental awareness as this will provide opportunities to describe, wonder about, investigate and celebrate their very existence. To develop writing skills, educators must include model text for students, when in collaboration with peers, to understand the format they are expected to replicate. The analysis of modelled material must focus on reading the model, creating an impression of the meaning of the model, and collaborating with others to create a written text similar to the model (Loane & Muir, 2017, p.xvix). Educators must ensure they allow time on a daily basis for students to work on their writing skills.
