For this assignment, I am only asking you to view the slides dealing with older, secondary students. If I remember correctly, all of you said you wanted to work with older students. These slides are about struggling readers in high school (and maybe a little middle school mixed in). They include many good pieces of information and all of it is research based. As a counselor and more importantly a school counselors we must ensure that no harm is done to the students. This is a very difficult time in the student’s lives and any added stress wither it is academically or personally may cause harm. If the students are placed in a remedial class it is the counselors duty to make sure they don’t feel like an outcast and have the proper outlets to express their feelings.

I would support the teachers by having sessions with the student’s see how they feels and to encourage them to explore their feelings. I would offer more chances for the students meet with me if they were feeling bullied or discouraged. I would help the teachers by offering them assistance with their tutoring sessions. I would seek out more classroom support and resources from the principal and from grants.

5.) What would be included in your plans for your first session(s) with the 6 students (all boys)?
I would have a regular conversation with the students. See what their likes and dislikes are. Make them feel confortable and to encourage them speak up on every issues they have. Next I would see what they feel they need help on. What areas they could improve on and what they want to fix. I think we need to keep the students involved in every part of the learning process. Encourage parental involvement and keep the students engaged in school activities.
