“Everyone in a theater watches the same film, but not everyone sees the same film” (317), says Bill Swanson, author of How Films Feed The Mind. Swanson discusses the factors that make a movie worth watching. Love And Mercy is a 2014 biopic directed by Bill Pohlad, based on Brian Wilson, leader and co-founder of The Beach Boys. Pohlad takes an unconventional approach to Wilson's life. He dives into the mind of the musical genius during two of the most important time periods of his life both musically and mentally. The beginning of the movie takes place in the 60s showing young Wilson (Paul Dano) in the early stages of his career. His father and manager at the time, Murry Wilson (Bill Camp) , who was abusive towards him was a big cause for Wilson's inner struggles. This time period is shown in Wilson's point of view exposing his feelings and the start of the “voices” in his head. The way a scene is shot can change the mood and the way we perceive it. Wilson is centered in many of the scenes. This shows his emotional detachment from the world at the time. In one of the scenes of Wilson and the Beach Boys, Wilson was in the pool diving to the deep end while the rest of the band remained in the shallow and refused to follow. This can be a metaphor for Wilson's distinct way of thinking compared to the rest of the band. The band often disagreed with him and the way he created music. The movie consists of many scenes that show Wilson in the studio where his music was created. His creativity came in spontaneous and unusual ways. For example, there is a scene where Wilson is recording with dogs in the studio and then proceeds to say, “You think we can fit a horse in here?” As if having barking dogs in the studio wasn't
