When Alexander was only 20, he received a full empire from his late father, King Philip of Macedonia. During 356 BCE, Alexander III of Macedon was born to father, King Philip of Macedonia, and mother, Olympia. Macedonia’s military continued to improve as a result of King Philip’s ruling. However in 336 BCE, Philip was unfortunately assassinated, and soon to be Alexander the Great, inherited Philip’s kingdom and army. At only 20, he set out to conquer Persia, eventually expanding his land all the way to India. Soon after, in 323 BCE, he became very ill, his passing occuring ten days later. How Great Was Alexander the Great? Alexander was great because he was a military genius and an inspiring leader. Alexander can be considered great because he was a military genius. For instance, “The engagement was...unlike any other previous battles.” The word “unlike” can be a negative or positive connotation. For example, “It was all he could do to keep going, but he did so, and his result (as result) was that the men were the better able to endure their misery when they saw that it was equally shared.” By continuing to fight, Alexander encouraged his men to also continue. The many men were able to not only relate to each other but also to their leader, Alexander. According to the text, “Alexander, with word of thanks for the gift, took the helmet, and in full view of the troops, poured the water on the ground. So extraordinary was the effect of this action that the water wasted by Alexander was as good as a drink for every man in the army.” To clarify, Alexander poured the water on the floor as to suffer as much as his fellow soldiers.
