Half court – Half court defending is quite a common tactic, and can be used in various different sports. Half court defence is where the defending team stay in their own half when they don’t have possession of the ball; they will not move out of their half at any given time, until they have possession. When the opposing team have the ball, all the defending teams players will move into their own half and contain their opponents, they won’t press up the field, they will just stay in their own half. The attacking team will then have to break the defending team down; it is much harder to break a team down when all their players are in their own half. There isn’t much space to move around in, as all the defending team are doing is containing you. The aim of the half court defence is to contain your opponents; you do this by staying in your own half and not pressing up the field. This tactic works better in different situations, for example in tag rugby when you are losing you will want to press up the field and gain possession again. This means you will use full court as it will put more pressure on your opponents, giving them more to think about; when you pressure your opponents they are more inclined to make a mistake. However, when you are winning the game, you will just want to contain your opponents, leaving no space for them to penetrate. If you use full court when winning, you are more open and its easier for the opposing team to break you down. So when you are winning the game of tag rugby, you would not use full court, however when you are losing, you would use full court.
