How Has David Changed In Safe As House

In the story “Safe as Houses”, David changes a lot from the beginning of the story to the end. Here are three ways in which he changed, something that we see change significantly is his attitude towards everything. Secondly, I think that throughout the book, David's behaviour becomes better and becomes more aware of the situation. Another thing that he made a lot of changes in is how he treats other people. I find that David was one of the characters that made significant changes throughout the story. I think that David changed for the better, and started to realize that he didn’t have to act tough or do annoying things to hide the fact that he was scared.

In the book, we see David's attitude change significantly. At the beginning of the book,

It would only have led to an argument, and it wasn't as if I could physically force him to wear it. "I'm not putting it on," he said defiantly, as if he were reading my mind. Apparently he wanted an argument. Big surprise.” (page 4). This shows that David was always trying to start an argument. This might be for several reasons, but I think the main reason why he always acted like that was because he was scared. In the book, it tells you that the McBride family had moved from the big city to a much smaller town, Weston, where this is currently taking place. For example, how he treated Lizzie from the beginning of the story to the end is drastically different from the end. An example from the beginning of the story is, “"Better to be funny-sounding than funny-looking," I said. "Lucky you," he said. You've managed both of them. "I decided it was best to ignore him.” (page 14). This shows that David loves to make fun of and joke around with Lizzie, and there are other examples of him acting up in my other paragraphs. I do think that there are far more examples of David treating Lizzie better than David treating Lizzie, like the example I just referred to. Here is an example of when David did treat Lizzie right, “David grabbed one of my hands and yanked it from the grip I had on the branch. He reached up to another spot. "Take hold and climb up!” he yelled. “I can’t do it”’ I whimpered. I can't.”"Elizabeth,” David said softly. “You have to go on.” “I can't.” “You have to. We need you.” (page 140). I think that this shows that David does care, this isn’t an example of him saying something nice, this is an example that shows that David cares about Lizzie and that he isn’t selfish. There is evidence of David saying nice things to Lizzie, but I think that this example shows that when it matters, he is serious.
