The focus of this essay is literacy in the early years, in the last 100 years what was perceived as our understanding of literacy and how it is learned and carried out has changed. Multimodal is a term used in the Australian Curriculum relating to the use of two or more modes for example, written language, spoken language, image and music. Children of this decade will be much more proficient in different modes before they begin primary school, Children needing to be skilled in so many modes it is vital to have a strong literacy foundation in place for students to have the ability to achieve within the different modes. A literacy block is implemented so that children are getting the opportunity to have uninterrupted learning that is tailored to their level of knowledge, Teachers cater to the individual and class needs by having structure in the way of a lesson plan this allows the teacher to scaffold and support students in their learning. The benefits of which have been researched and has been proven to be effective when delivered appropriately. The components in the reading half of the literacy block are read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, word study & writing. Integral planning has gone on before the teacher is able to implement a plan into the class room. (Barratt-Pugh & Rohl, 2000, p. 1)
