With just about 13 million Americans unemployed, many struggled to find a place to live and to maintain a healthy family. As men lost their jobs, many went off to search for somewhere to work, or went off to war leaving many mothers single and abandoned. The women who were abandoned were left to support their children and families alone, which was a dramatic change in lifestyle. However, it was not an easy task for women to find a job as discrimination and sexism was a painful reality. With the fall of the economy and the start of an unfamiliar lifestyle, women definitely had a major contribution in the workforce and economy, but just how impactful was it?
Throughout Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, we see that domestic jobs are assigned to a person based on their gender within families. When these domestic gender roles are not met, tension ensues within families. First, Okonkwo constantly expects his wives to cook and clean, and when Okonkwo’s wives do not execute their domestic roles, Okonkwo punishes them. Second, Okonkwo dissociates himself from his father, Unoka, in all aspects of life because he feels he does not fulfill the gender role of a hard-working, brave man.
Throughout time, the morals and attitudes of people change because of what is around in society. An example of this is how Okonkwo, the main protagonist in things fall apart, leads his family. Okonkwo is very strict and expects his wives and children to obey his every command, this caused his young wives and children to be scared of him. “Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children”(13).
In this day and age, gender identity is becoming more prevalent in society and has transformed tremendously over the years; gender equality is not only a women’s issue, but both a concern for females and males. Gender identity can be described as the characteristics expressed by individuals that pertain to traditional gender roles. This essay will discuss how gender identity has changed over time and how gender equality is an issue to all genders and not only females; these are two concepts that are widely spoken about in modern society.
In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, traditional gender roles played a major theme throughout the novel. In Igbo culture the man is always the head of the family, family being his wife or wives and each of the wives children’s. Okonkwo had several wives that he ordered around, they were never to question what they are told to do because they are expected to follow rules. “Do what you are told women” (12). Men would always talk to women a very demanding way.
The importance of being earnest, a play by Oscar Wilde, is infamously known for having challenged the traditional ideas of gender. The traditional views of gender relations in the Vidtorian Era was that men were active, manly, and independant, whilst women were passive, pliant and dependant. **** This is not shown in the play whatsoever. The men are passive, pliant and dependant whereas the women are strong, or rather strong willed, as well as being far more masculine and independant. Oscar Wilde challenged the traditional views by reversing the roles on most, if not all, of the characters in the play.
Although gender roles have changed over time, where males and females have become more equivalent , a certain level of behaviors and tasks which are acceptable for men and women still exist today. Alternatively of women and men steadily playing the gender roles they always play, they should change it around and try to do something divergent when being defined in a category of gender roles. The main purpose of the present research was to analyze the impact of globalization on changing gender roles: A case of Gujrat. The data was analyzed by using the available literature, archives, published research papers, journals, published reports as well as online authentic material which is published by government and non-governmental organizations. A thematic analysis was done to draw the final results and conclusion. Different themes were attributed through review of literature and available resources with reference to research question and objective of the present research. It was concluded from the present research that globalization plays an important role in changing gender roles.
