The Crucible by “Arthur Miller” is a retelling of the Salem Witch Trials which took place in the 1690s. During these times women were not given much of a say in the community, and only land owning men of the puritan faith were allowed to participate in government. Abigale Williams, a poor adopted woman knew this better than anyone in the town of Salem. Abigale has witnessed some very troublesome moments in her life that has allowed her to pick up a manipulative, conniving personality. So when she is given an opportunity to have a say in court through the Salem Witch Trials she is determined to take full advantage of it. In The book The Cubical by Arthur Miller when Abigale Williams, a lowly regarded woman in the community of Salem, is given an opportunity to participate in court she jumps on it with evil intensions. She begins to threaten and even attempt to murder innocent people as these trials commence. An example of this would be when she says, “breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you” (The Crucible, 19.) This shows the readers how evil and out of line she becomes as the trial commences. Also as the trials continue Abby becomes more desperate for John Proctor. She goes so far as to use the witch trials as a weapon against John Proctors wife Elizabeth so she can have John to herself. The court officials do not realize that Abby is lying about confession at first, and when they do realize she is lying they do not stop her because they don’t want people to question their judgement.
