Andrei Chikatilo: Serial Killer
Should a person who has a clear mental or emotional instability, whether it was in the past or present, be punished for their wrong actions? Meaning should someone who has obviously something psychology wrong be punished for any wrong actions including; murder, rape, and other heinous crimes. Andrei Chikatilo was born in the village of Yabluchne in the Sumy Oblast of the Ukraine SSR on October 16th 1936.(Newton. 41.) Chikatilo’s parents were collective farm laborers who lived in a one room hut. They received no wages for the work they had done, instead they received the right to cultivate a piece of land behind the hut they all lived in. The family seldom had a good supply of food; Chikatilo later claimed not to have eaten bread until the age of twelve. The family had to even eat leaves and grass in an effort to stave off hunger. His mother would repeatedly tell him prior to his birth that he had an older brother who had been kidnapped and cannibalized by their starving neighbors, although it has never been established that this incident actually occurred. Chikatilo watched what he described as “horrors”: bombing, fires, and shooting of which his mother and himself would hide in cellars and ditches. On one occasion, they were forced to watch their own one room hut to burn to the ground. Chikatilo’s and his mother had to share a single bed; he was a chronic bed wetter and was belittled and beaten by his mother whenever he would wet the bed.
