Is your father adventurous, athletic, or exciting to be around, or is he always too busy and tired? Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mockingbird, clarifies what the main characters, Scout and Jem Finch, think of their father, Atticus Finch, in chapter ten. This chapter makes the idea of Atticus being different than the other fathers in Maycomb County clear. The things Atticus does with his life and the way he acts is the complete opposite of what his children want for a father. They want Atticus to be able to do the activities that the other fathers do with their children, but Atticus won’t. Maybe being different than everyone else isn’t a bad thing either.
Atticus Finch is getting old and worn out. According to Scout he was nearly fifty years old. Because of his condition, Atticus had an easy job of working in an office. When the dogs get sick they get vicious and attack people. While Jem and Scout are out venturing they see a dog that is sick wandering the streets, so they hurried home. When they get to the house they tell their cook, Calpurnia, to call Atticus and warn all the neighbors. While Calpurnia is warning all the neighbors Atticus and they sheriff, Heck Tate, arrive with a gun and ammo. They were planning to shoot the mad dog. For some reason the sheriff wants Atticus to shoot the dog, and that seemed fairly odd to Scout and Jem because they thought their father didn’t know how to. Atticus finally took the gun and walked cautiously to the middle of the street. He then raised the gun and pulled the trigger. Atticus hit the dog right between they eyes.
