In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, a man named Atticus Finch, a parent to Scout and Jem Finch, plays a very memorable role in being influential to his children. Atticus preaches to his children that they should never judge anyone unless they have walked in their shoes. He also makes an effort to not listen to how other people parent their children given their time period by continuing to do what he thinks is best for his children. This teaches them that they should always put themselves into a different perspective before being quick to assume. In the end, Atticus proves to become an influential role model in developing new understandings and lessons for his children. …show more content…
Being a good parent, “involves guiding their children to be successful, but it does not involve controlling, micromanaging, or hovering over kids” (“What”). There are many different varieties of influence Scout and Jem could follow such as the general wave of hatred toward the non-white community their town follows. Atticus teaching them from a young age while many challenging obstacles occur provides a well enough reason to justify his counting as a wonderful parent. Guiding your child forward during a difficult time comes with its many challenges just as proven when “we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win” (Lee 87). Atticus guiding Scout and Jem without controlling them implements the idea that while others might not have the same beliefs, they should at least continue to fight for what they believe is right.
