Henry Lafayette Dubose a very persnickety woman, made a big hissy fit while talking to Atticus’s kin about his actions. She says “Yes indeed, what has this world come to when a Finch goes against his raising?” (Harper pg. 105) She believes that Atticus has done a major crime. Mrs. Dubose doesn’t understand why a white man like Atticus would stand for a black man when he could stand for a white man like himself. She thinks that Atticus has stooped to such a low level that even God can’t forgive him. She said that Atticus is: “no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” (Harper pg. 105) What Mrs. Dubose said made Jem Finch (Atticus’s son) madder than a snake that married a garden hose! Now don’t y’all get your feathers ruffled over Mr. Ewell’s attempt to make Atticus madder than a wet hen. Being the calm man that he is, Atticus responded, saying that he was too old to fight. This only enraged Mr. Ewell farther. Many folks in Maycomb are worried wat this will mean for Atticus and his chill’n, many of the adults wonder whether Mr. Ewell will go after the Finches and whether or not he will go through with his God forbidden threats. When Atticus was asked how he felt on the subject, the only thing that he said was: “I wish Bob Ewell wouldn’t chew tobacco.” (Harper pg. 121) You’ve got to hand the blue ribbon to Atticus Finch, even in the face of danger he can keep his
