To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a book about a brother and sister, Jem and Scout, who live in Maycomb County and their best friend Dill. Their father is Atticus Finch, Atticus Finch is like a father to Dill, who is a lawyer. He deals with prejudice both inside and outside the courtroom. The toughest case he had received was with Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a negro who was accused of raping a white woman. This is what Atticus wants to prepare Jem and Scout for, the real world, so he instills many lessons in them. One of the lessons he told them was that “it is a sin to kill a mockingbird”(119). He did not get angry at her, instead he persuaded Jem to do what Mrs. Dubose asked him to do. So from that day on Jem read to Mrs. Dubose every afternoon after school and Saturdays. Atticus knew his children were good kids but by teaching them these lessons he made them better kids and helped other people along the way. For instance, when Jem, Scout, and Dill tried to communicate with Boo Radley by pushing a fishing pole through a window, in the Radley house, with a note attached to it it taught Scout something. When Atticus caught Dill pushing the fishing pole through the window he told the three of them to stop tormenting the man. Which caused Scout to think, “What Mr. Radley did was his own business. If he wanted to come out, he would. If he wanted to stay inside his own house he had the right to stay inside free from the attention of inquisitive children…”(65).
