Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is based in a small town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the early 1930’s. The story is narrated by Atticus Finch's daughter Scout. The main character, Atticus Finch is the father of Scout and Jem, growing up they were taught to accept people by who they are, not the color of their skin, they lived in a town where racism was very popular. Atticus Finch was a liberal lawyer who took on the case of Tom Robinson, an african american man who was accused of beating and raping a white woman named Mayella, many in the town of Maycomb didn't approve of a white man helping an african american who everyone believed beat and raped Mayella. Robinson was taken into custody and was being held in a jail cell that can be viewed in from the outside, the night before the trial, Atticus was informed that a Lynch mob was heading over to shoot and kill Mr. Robinson so Atticus sat outside Mr. Robinson's cell that night.
Jem, Scout and Dill noticed that Atticus had been leaving and followed him to the jail cell. When they got there, Atticus was doing nothing but reading a newspaper and sitting outside of Mr. Robinson’s cell waiting for them to show, before Scout, Dill, and Jem left, the Floyd mob showed up in black car’s holding weapons and piled in front of the cell, Scout, Jem and Dill ran to Atticus’s side as soon as Atticus was not visible, Scout came out and talked to the mob and they soon left so they wouldn't want to show any harm in front of the kids, after they left Atticus told the children to go home and get some …show more content…

Robinson had beaten and and raped her, when asked about where she had been beaten she said “He hit me in my head, he beat me and choked me all along my neck” it became clear to Atticus later in the trial that Mr. Robinson couldn't have choked, beaten or raped Ms. Mayella because he had ripped his left arm muscle when he was a child working at his father's shop, when Atticus brought this up, Mayella started changing her story a bit but when she noticed that Atticus’s questions were confusing her and she was scared that something might slip out that could prove Mr. Robinson had never done anything to her, she threw a tantrum and had to go back to her seat.
The judge was a really big part of racism because he knew that Tom Robinson was innocent but still found Robinson guilty, he didn't want to be rumored as a “N-word lover” because he let an african american free. The whole town really represented racism because they used african americans because they were colored and different. They were treated different because they weren't rich and
