It was during the 1400's when the face of exploration would change forever by one man.This infamous individual is Christopher Columbus. Known as the best darn sailor to ever live, his determination and hard working soul has shaped the world we have today. However, while many are taught that Columbus was a hero or an aristocrat, that is not actually accurate. To be historically correct, Christopher Columbus brought death and horror to the Americas. He slaughtered, tortured, and stole from the natives that lived there. Nevertheless, many still admire him for founding the New World and taking the first steps to creating the world we have today.
Genoa, Italy, 1451. This sea town is where Cristóbal Colón, otherwise known as Christopher Columbus, took his first breath. It was only when he was a teenager that he was exposed to sailing. Initially, he got a job on a merchant ship. He was at sea until 1470 when French privateers besieged his ship as it was cruising north along the Portuguese shoreline. Initially, Columbus visited Trinidad and South America before heading back to Hispaniola. There, the diseased settlement issued a murderous revolt against Columbus’s brothers for their brutality and mismanagement. In fact, the conditions were so horrible that Spanish authorities had to find a new governor to send over. Because of this, Christopher Columbus was forced to return Spain, but there was a catch: he was to come back in chains. In 1502 after most of his charges were gone, he somehow convinced the Spanish king to pay for one last fourth voyage. He made it all the way to Panama where he had to abandon half of his ships because of the hostile natives.
