In Hamlet, the well-known classic tragedy play by William Shakespeare, the story starts with a lament over the King Hamlet Senior’s death which is assassinated by Claudius, his own brother. Undoubtedly, Claudius is the most villainous character in the play for his ambitious and dangerous schemes. However, some people may view him as a political leader with a great strategy and adaptive mind. On the bright side, Claudius can be described as a fox, a cunning creature, for which he is able to come up with an assassination that is able to deceive the whole nation of Denmark. Furthermore, Claudius also has one important trait of a leader which is calmness, and this trait fits perfectly with water. Just as water is able to change its shape into whatever it is containing in, Claudius has the ability to adapts to whichever situation he is in easily. Inversely, Claudius’ inward personality can often be considered as a snake for all of his schemes. His plans of taking his brother’s crown by assassinating him with poison, or his attempt of murdering Hamlet by poisoning Laertes’ sword and the beverage that Hamlet is supposed to drink after the fight are similar to how a snake would kill its prey. Because of his wicked and evil soul, black perfectly reflects Claudius’ true personality as he always indirectly decrees orders to harm others without confronting them in person. Even more, Claudius prays to God for forgiveness but it ends up for his benefits instead of repentance, yet he continues to harm more bad deeds toward Hamlet.
