In many works of literature, cruelty is used as the main factor of conflict throughout many novels. Mary Shelley's 1818 novel titled Frankenstein includes many scenarios where cruelty is the main cause of many conflicts between the characters and within the characters. Cruelty is seen throughout the novel as a whole, but, more specifically when the monster is not given an actual name by his creator, Dr. Frankenstein, when Dr. Frankenstein's creation is beaten by others because of his acts of kindness, and lastly when Frankenstein's creation begins to steal from the cottage people. When readers begin to become familiar with Dr. Frankenstein's monster, it is sensible because the monster is not given an actual name, his creator must not care for him. Since the beginning, Dr. Frankenstein has rejected his creation. His creation and he wants nothing to do with it. This is his way of dehumanizing "it", he feels that if he doesn't give "it" a name, "it" cannot become his own. The monster begins to notice that he is being rejected. He feels like he's being rejected by society and fails to feel like he has a place to belong. Dr. Frankenstein States, "I trembled excessively I could not endure thinking of and for less allude to the occurrences of its proceeding night." (Page 64). Dr. Frankenstein is cruel and he wants no part in his monster or his creation. Dr. Franksetein knows what it's like to feel alone, yet he still fails to treat his creation like "it" belongs. The monster steals from the villagers, who are very poor and who are struggling to feed their little families. This is cruel on the monster's behalf because he knows exactly what it feels like to think you have nothing, and to think the world is against you. They are already a family who is struggling and cannot afford to have their things stolen from them. Chapter 11 references how food is stolen and how food is very scarce. Chapter 12 then mentions the monster's guilt and how he feels he has to stop now. This shows that even someone who is going through the toughest things can still do the same hurt to others. The monster has felt a whirlwind of emotions in his life and continues to put that hurt on others, this shows that just because you have cruelty put on you, that does not automatically mean you will not hurt
