In the book, The Great Gatsby, James Gatsby has one goal, to earn the love and acknowledgment of Daisy Buchanan. Throughout the novel, author Scott Fitzgerald uses his own life experiences to make a strong point about the shallow, empty, materialistic values of American high society. When looking at the American high society in The Great Gatsby, there are no real values besides living life for the moment. The high class characters portrayed in Gatsby party their lives away with no ambitions beyond superficial facades. Some of these superficial characters include Nick Carraway, Jordan Baker, Tom Bunchanan, Daisy, and Gatsby, who is only there to impress Daisy. Why is this a problem? Well, Fitzgerald is known for writing about his past, personal experiences and what he has gone through in life. Additionally, Fitzgerald finds it hard and “...once said he could not write unless he brought an intensity of emotion to the story (68) Careless people” One of the most traumatic things Fitzgerald went through in his life was his relationship with his sixteen year old girlfriend, Ginevra King. He had spent many years chasing her and trying to gain her love. When reading about Scott Fitzgerald ‘s personal life after reading The Great Gatsby, there are strong notions that Fitzgerald created Gatsby to be a reflection of himself. He, just like Gatsby, fell short of getting together with the love of his life. To further prove that Gatsby and Fitzgerald are portrayed to be the same person, Daisy leads Gatsby down paths he does not enjoy. This is a parallel situation seen in Fitzgerald’s life when Ginevra does the same to him. Chasing an empty person who has no ambition ultimately leads to emptiness. Fitzgerald found another love interest in his life, but in the end “it was the wound over Ginevra that never healed (72) careless people.” Fitzgerald always had some type of emptiness in him ever since he and Ginevra went their separate
