In the Play “The Crucible” written by Arthur Miller, it tells a partially fictionalized story of the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people who were accused of witchcraft. “The Crucible” took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay during 1669 and 1693. In the Play there is a girl named Abigail, she is a witch. Abigail causes most of the mayhem in the book. Then there’s John Proctor, he is a very religious man, but is a hypocrite and is married to a woman named Elizabeth. Abigail has been working in their home as a maid and starts having an affair with Proctor. When Elizabeth finds out they are having an affair, she kicks Abigail out her home and spreads hearsay about Abigail being a harlot. Proctor then breaks off the affair with Abigail. She is not killed because she is with child. The least interesting scene is Act 4 because it is a bleak moment. Most of the innocent people Abigail and her “group” accused of being witches were hanged. Elizabeth and Proctor have been locked up for about six months now and it is time for Proctor to be hanged. Elizabeth is trying to make Proctor confess to being a witch so that he can live. Proctor is asking Elizebeth for forgiveness for his adultery. He needs to have the weight of the sins he committed of his shoulders but she is not giving it to him. She is telling him that only he can forgive himself. “PROCTOR: Spite only keeps me silence. It is hard to give a lie to dogs. Pause, for the first time he turns directly to her. I would have your forgiveness, Elizabeth. ELIZABETH: It is not mine to give, John, I am —” (Miller 138) They have a heart to heart where she confesses to him that she feels like it's her fault he committed adultery for being cold with him. At the end of the scene Proctor doesn’t confess and is executed because he doesn’t want to lie, he wants to die an honest, free
