Introduction In “Fahrenheit 451”, published in 1953, Ray Bradbury describes a lot of technologies predicted that did not exist at the time the book was written. These technologies were all come from Bradbury’s imagination. However, in the 21st century, some of them eventually do exist today, achieving Bradbury’s prescient predictions. In this paper, examples of technologies predicted mentioned in the novel will be identified and compared with the existing technology now. It also discusses the significant social changes taking place at the time the novel was written that influence the types of and used for the technology predicted. Seashells and thimble radios are devices that allow people in the book to listen to music for entertainment or listen to the radio for getting information. (Bradbury, 1953) This could be compared to earbud and Bluetooth technology. In the late winter of 1988, Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia, and Toshiba formed the Bluetooth Special Industry Group (SIG) to develop and promote a global solution for short-range wireless communication, which caused the invention of Bluetooth in 1994. The bullet could let them contact and talk to each other privately, so that Montag can ask Faber questions when he faces problems on reading. (Bradbury, 1953) This technology is quite similar to the technology of invisible wireless earpiece that some security departments might use, like the CIA and FBI, in our modern society. They are also available to public now too. (PRWeb, 2013) About the features, the green bullets in the novel seem to have a stronger function comparing to the invisible wireless earpiece because the green bullet does not need a microphone for speaking. For invisible wireless earpiece, microphone, mostly hided in clothes, is still needed in order to receive the voice of the speakers.
