How Is Fahrenheit 451 Relevant Today

“There must be something in books, something we cannot imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You do not stay for nothing” (Bradbury). In this quote, we see the protagonist of Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag, slowly starting to crave the knowledge of books. Unfortunately, our modern-day world is all too like the dystopian Montag society in which we live. A society where books are slowly starting to become irrelevant as screens take over. “And now since you're a fireman's wife, it's your house and your turn, for all the houses your husband burned and the people he hurt without thinking” (Bradbury 124). We all know that firefighters in our modern-day society do not burn houses and are really nothing like the Firemen in Fahrenheit 451. But what people do not realize is that they have a close similarity to the police force in our world. That similarity is in their relationship with the citizens of their town. Like the firefighters in Montag’s dystopian world, the police here are not popular, sometimes even hated. Normally when a police officer arrives at your house, or pulls you over it means dreadful things, like an expensive ticket. But following the George Floyd incident, and the Black Lives Matter Movement, our law enforcement is now starting to be feared by the African American community. An encounter with an officer could now mean a beating, or death. These feelings are all too similar to the feelings of the citizens of Fahrenheit 451 where when Firemen come to your house, it means you are now homeless, and perhaps
