Scott Fitzgerald Fitzgerald or Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald faced many challenges in life but is still relevant today, because of his fascinating life and the books he has written. Fitzgerald was born of Edward Fitzgerald and Mary McQuillan Fitzgerald. He wrote many great books such as ¨The Great Gatsby¨ and ¨This Side of Paradise.¨ Challenges of Fitzgerald's Life. Fitzgerald was born to a poor, salesman father and an Irish Catholic mother and, together they owned a grocery store. Some say Fitzgerald inherited his ways from his father, in being a failure anyway. Fitzgerald was named after a distance cousin who wrote what is now called “The Star Spangled Banner." Fitzgerald’s Writing Career. Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He developed a fascination in writing at early age, while attending Catholic schools in 1903. Fitzgerald’s first publication was “The Mystery of the Raymond Mortgage” which was published in the school newspaper when he was 13. After being kicked out of Princeton University, Fitzgerald enrolled in the U.S. Army and was based in Camp Sheridan, Alabama. Fitzgerald was a second lieutenant at the time he met Zelda Sayre. Zelda was the daughter of an Alabama Supreme Court Judge and was often called a “Society Darling.” The Great War ended and Fitzgerald never left the camp. After leaving the Army, Fitzgerald asked Zelda to marry him, but she refused, because he could not support her financially. After writing many writing many short stories for different companies, he started making enough money and again asked Zelda to marry him and she agreed. Zelda became pregnant and they moved to Europe in 1921, they later moved backed to St. Paul, Minnesota for the birth of their only child, Frances (Scottie) Fitzgerald. She was born in October of
