The Queen Of Denmark
In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, Gertrude is the Queen of Denmark and mother of Hamlet. Throughout the play Gertrude often appears with other characters. She was once married to King Hamlet. However, after King Hamlet was killed, she later married his brother Claudius who became the King. This arises Hamlet’s urge to kill his uncle, due to the fact that not only did he kill his father but also married his mother. Qualities that I strongly believe would fit Gertrude are caring, gullible, and naive. Her actions and decisions she makes in the play have made some significance.

Hamlet and Gertrude react very differently to certain scenes throughout the play. Right in the beginning of the play the King of Denmark dies. Gertrude and Hamlet take this tragedy in very contrast ways. Hamlet becomes very sad and depressed, Gertrude on the other hand, saw this tragedy as something normal that is bound to happen “Thou know’st’ tis common, all lives must die,” (Ⅰ.Ⅱ.72). The Queen was able to move on so quickly, however Hamlet could not let the past go. Another way that they are different is shown when the Queen says “ The drink, the drink! I am poisoned.” (Ⅴ.Ⅱ.315) revealing she knows that there was poison in her cup, she could have taken the opportunity in the time she had to try to get revenge towards Claudius for attempting son however she didn't. Hamlet on the other hand, as soon as he realized what was going on all along he right away got Hamlet to drink the poison “Drink off this potion. Is thy union here ? Follow my mother.” (Ⅴ.Ⅱ.315). Hamlet was a character who did not care what others thought and was very courageous, however Gertrude is very calm and does not have the urge to do something right away.
