Haiti was an island in the Caribbean that was colonized by France because it was known to produce good quality coffee, sugar, indigo, and cotton. 1. Haiti was under France’s rule when the French Revolution broke out and it inspired the population to fight against France. 2. The lower class was “97% of the population and had 65% of land” 18 the lower class had less land than they did people. In the Declaration of Man it states, “Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good.” During the revolution, France also abolished the unfair and unjust social hierarchy that it had. The lower class had gotten what they wanted in both the French and Haitian Revolutions, equality and the same rights as the rich. In the end, the French and Haitian Revolutions may have achieved equality for all, but they were still vastly different. In the Haitian Declaration of Independence it states, “What do we have in common with this murderous nation? Its cruelty compared to our evident moderation, its color unlike our own, the wide seas that separate us, our avenging climate, all tell us that they are not our brothers and never will be.” 19 The French had Haiti under their control and even though they are very far away from each other the French would not give Haiti
