The Scarlett Letter is a without a doubt a classic piece of American Literature. It looks at many different aspects of human interactions and how those outcomes can affect people. The character of Hester Prynne is a great example of these ideas in action. Based on the interactions that Hester has over the course of the novel she can be viewed as a strong female character that stood up for her rights and refused to bend no matter the personal cost or she can be viewed as weak female that refused to standup for herself and her daughter and leave a bad situation. Hester can be viewed as a strong woman if you view her through a progressive lens and see her actions as those of a rebellion instead of adherence. She wears her “A” in a prominent place and it is ornate. She could make it small and easily concealed but she prefers to make it stand out. This is not an action of a weak woman. It is an act of defiance. It is Hester standing up to the community in one of the only ways she has available to her. She also shows her strength by choosing to remain in the community. Yes, Hester wears her “A” in prominence just like she is ordered. This is because she does not have the strength to fight her punishment and she is too scared to hide it. She does not have the courage to find out what will happen to her if she doesn’t stick to what she was sentenced to do. Another way that Hester shows her weakness is by staying in the community. She subjects Pearl to a life of being and outcast and isolation because she refuses to leave. Her sewing skills afford her the ability to start life over in a different place where she and Pearl are unknown.
