In The Catcher in the Rye, one of the first things you learn about Holden is his disapproval and hatred for people he considered “fake.” Anyone he deemed fake was not worth his time and wanted nothing to do with. He describes fake as someone who puts on an act, or another face, to fool the people around them. In this quote Hamlet is accusing Ophelia of the same thing. He calls her out for putting on a show, for convincing everyone that she was innocent and unaware, but really she know what she are doing. Both Holden and Hamlet have seen so many deceitful people that they both can't stand people who try to fool others into thinking they are someone they are not. Because of the many actors they have had in their lives, anyone they even think is trying to fool them, is a person they hate and therefore can't trust. Horatio was not only someone he grew up with but he was the one person in his life that he had his faith in 100 percent. Everyone in both Holdens and Hamlets lives have disappointed them in one way or another, but both had that one person who they looked up to. For Holden it was his younger brother Allie, for Hamlet it was Horatio. Both of these males had characteristics about them that caused Hamlet and Holden to set them above everyone else. The only difference between Allie and Horatio, is that Allie is dead. Holden still sees Allie was the person he aspires to be but unlike Horatio, Allie is just a memory Holden has. These individuals were the people in both of their lives that always seemed to see passed all the faults they had and helped them became who they wanted to
