An ethnography was conducted on Holden Caulfield about what he was like during his day-to-day life. Holden Caulfield from the book Catcher in the Rye has been very busy in his brain, and doing things that he wanted to do. He got kicked out of Pencey, and he didn’t want his parents to know, so he decided to live by himself in New York City. During the ethnography, Holden Caulfield was followed around and observed what he did when he was living by himself. The study started by following Holden around school, and what he acted like during school. People followed Holden around his school and campus. This study will focus on PTSD, as Holden is suffering from PTSD for multiple reasons. (Background Information) Holden Caulfield is from New York City, and comes from a family of 6, with two brothers and a sister. His brother D. B. has gone to Hollywood to pursue his dream of becoming a writer, his sister Phoebe is living at home, and his other brother, Allie, has passed away. Holden Caulfield has been kicked out of multiple schools, most recently out of Pencey. His parents always got upset with him every time he got kicked out of school. However, he wasn’t worried, Lee 2 because he knew what getting kicked out was like, and wasn’t scared of getting kicked out. He has struggled in school, and he doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life. Holden’s brain often goes everywhere, even when he’s talking to others, and he can’t focus on one topic at a time. He always gets flashbacks when someone starts talking to him. (Literature Review) PTSD, short for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, is a disorder where someone has difficulty living a normal life after a traumatic event.
