In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, QUOTE FROM THE CRUCIBLE. ISIS has been a terror all over the world recently. The terrorist organization has caused a big disruption, and a feeling of uneasiness to thousands of people. Over three hundred years ago the Salem witchcraft trials took place. Despite the time gap, ISIS and the Salem witchcraft trials have striking similarities. ISIS is not only a group to be feared, it is a group with power. ISIS controls over half of Syria’s oil asset, as well as multiple oil fields in Iraq. This oil is taken and sold on the black market by ISIS. ISIS seeks out their victims and members based on their religion. Just as in the crucible they thought witchcraft was wrong because of their religion. The second similarity is that most of the people who were questioned were killed anyway. ISIS captures people and uses them for information, then most of the time once ISIS has gotten what they wanted from the person, they will murder them. In The Crucible if your name was brought up in court you were branded a witch and if you didn’t confess to witchcraft in the court you were to be hanged. The third similarity is that innocent people were killed. ISIS has killed people just based solely on the person having a different religion. That alone is proof that ISIS has killed innocent people. In the witchcraft trials if you did not admit to using witchcraft you were automatically considered guilty and would be hanged. Many people did not admit to using witchcraft because they knew it was a lie, so they denied it, and accepted their death. People being killed for not admitting to witchcraft shows that innocent people were killed in Salem. Finally, the fourth similarity between ISIS and the Salem witchcraft trials is that they both used violence to intimidate their victims. ISIS captures people and films their death as examples for what they are capable of to scare people into following them. ISIS is using this violence to intimidate their victims, and show them what they are capable of. In Salem if someone was convicted of witchcraft they would be hanged. Everyone knew this, so they admitted to witchcraft to avoid death. By having the possibility of being hanged, this intimidated people into admitting to witchcraft. Although there is a time gap between ISIS and the Salem witchcraft trials, they have multiple
